What OpenAI announced

OpenAI says it notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down the contract through which Cursor offers OpenAI models. The proposed shutoff date is November 12, 2026, which OpenAI describes as the maximum notice allowed under the agreement. The company also says it will not make future models available through Cursor during that period.

The decision follows Cursor's August 14 announcement that it had been acquired by SpaceX. Cursor said the combination would give its team access to a much larger GPU fleet and support development of stronger, less expensive models. OpenAI frames the contract decision as a compliance and change-of-control issue rather than a judgment about Cursor's product quality.

What developers can and cannot assume

OpenAI's post describes an intended wind-down and a proposed date; it does not list every affected model, Cursor plan or enterprise contract. Cursor had not published a matching migration notice on the official acquisition page at the time of this review. Customers should therefore treat the vendor dashboard and their own contract as the operational source of truth.

The immediate risk is not that the editor stops working. Cursor routes across several model families and develops its own models. The narrower risk is behavioral drift: prompts, tool calls, context handling and code-review quality can change when a workflow moves from one model to another.

A practical transition plan

Engineering teams should export a list of repositories, automations and evaluation tasks that explicitly depend on an OpenAI model in Cursor. Re-run a representative set against at least one available substitute, comparing completion correctness, tool-call reliability, latency, cost and security controls rather than relying on a general leaderboard.

Visit the AINewsInu homepage and Coding coverage for updates as the deadline approaches. Keep model selection configurable, document a rollback path and avoid changing editor settings, model provider and agent permissions simultaneously. That turns a supplier change into a measured migration instead of an emergency rewrite.
