From conversation to finished artifact

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as an agent that can gather information across connected apps and files, then produce finished materials such as spreadsheets, presentations, documents and web apps. It is powered by GPT-5.6 and incorporates technology developed through Codex, extending an agent pattern that began in software into general knowledge work.

The product claim is broader than better chat. A conventional assistant waits for the next prompt; a work agent decomposes a goal, moves between tools and continues until it reaches a deliverable. That shift can remove handoffs, but it also gives the system more opportunities to make an unnoticed wrong decision.

The real test is operational control

Long-running execution makes status and reversibility as important as intelligence. Users need to see what the agent is doing, which files it changed, what assumptions it made and where it is blocked. A polished final deck is not enough if nobody can reconstruct the sources or calculations behind it.

Organizations should begin with bounded tasks whose outputs are easy to inspect. Research briefs, first-draft presentations and isolated data transformations are safer starting points than sending messages, changing records or publishing directly to customers.

A practical adoption checklist

Before connecting a workspace, define the minimum data and tools the agent needs. Require approval before external communication, spending, deletion or publication. Save source links and intermediate artifacts, and test whether a human can pause and recover a partially completed run.

Finally, measure accepted output per hour, not activity. An agent that works for three hours and creates two hours of review is not autonomous productivity. The strongest deployments will pair longer model horizons with narrower authority and clearer evidence.
