Two models with different licenses

IBM introduced Granite Speech 5.0 Turbo CTC in two versions. The Apache 2.0 checkpoint is available for commercial use, while a second checkpoint uses CC-BY-NC-SA and is restricted to noncommercial use.

That distinction is not a minor footnote. Teams evaluating quality should record the exact checkpoint because the model with the best reported aggregate word error rate may not be legally suitable for the intended product.

The reported speed and accuracy

IBM reports an aggregate OpenASR word error rate of 5.00% for the commercial model and 4.85% for the noncommercial version. It also says batched inference on an NVIDIA H200 exceeded 12,600 times real time, equivalent to processing roughly three and a half hours of audio per second.

These results come from the model publisher. Hardware, batch size, audio length, precision and decoding settings can change throughput, while public benchmark audio may not represent accents, noise and vocabulary in a specific deployment.

Why compact CTC models remain useful

Large speech-language models can add reasoning and broader context, but many transcription pipelines primarily need fast, stable text. A compact CTC model can be easier to host and scale for archives, call analysis or subtitle preparation.

The compromise may appear in punctuation, speaker attribution, multilingual coverage and rare terms. The release targets English recognition, so it should not be treated as a general multilingual transcription solution.

How to evaluate it

Build a consented test set that reflects microphones, rooms, speakers and specialist vocabulary. Score names, numbers and negation separately from average word error rate, and measure latency at the concurrency the service expects.

Use the AINewsInu homepage and Audio & Voice hub for the full testing workflow. Before adoption, confirm the checkpoint license, retain model and configuration identifiers, and review consequential quotations against the original recording.
