Start with the exact workload

A hardware ratio is meaningful only when both systems run the same model, precision and task. Record context length, output length, batch size, concurrency, sparsity and any speculative decoding or quantization.

OpenAI tested Jalapeño across GPT-OSS 120B, DeepSeek R1 and Kimi K2.5 1T. That breadth is useful, yet each range still needs a result table that connects a particular model and configuration to the stated improvement.

Separate throughput from latency

Peak throughput often rises when a server batches many requests, while an individual request waits longer. Interactive assistants and agents may prefer lower time to first token and consistent tail latency over the largest aggregate token rate.

Compare systems at the same service-level objective. Plot throughput against latency and include the 95th or 99th percentile so occasional stalls are not hidden inside an average.

Draw the power and cost boundary

Work per watt changes depending on whether the denominator includes accelerator power, host CPUs, memory, networking and cooling. Ask where the meter sits and whether idle consumption is included.

Then add capital cost, software, support and expected utilization. A chip can be energy efficient at full load and economically poor if it is scarce, difficult to program or idle during uneven traffic.

Connect the benchmark to useful outcomes

Tokens are an infrastructure unit, not a guarantee of correctness. Evaluate completed requests that satisfy the product's quality threshold, including retries, safety checks and tool failures.

AINewsInu's Research & Data coverage links benchmark claims to their methods. The best next step for Jalapeño and every custom accelerator is a reproducible evaluation package and independent result under a clearly defined production workload.
