Begin with provenance, not writing style
AI detection is not a reliable foundation for an investigation. Start with the organization behind a claim: domain history, legal identity, named staff, contact information and whether researchers exist outside the site that cites them.
Trace important passages and datasets to their earliest available source. Copied scholarship, invented affiliations and missing methodology are stronger indicators of fabricated authority than smooth or repetitive prose alone.
Map coordination carefully
Capture publication times, account creation patterns, identical links, reused images and unusual translation sequences across platforms. A shared message does not automatically prove central control, so distinguish observation from inference.
Preserve URLs, screenshots and timestamps because posts can disappear after a platform acts. Record the collection method and time zone so another researcher can reconstruct the sequence.
Do not confuse activity with impact
Count authentic engagement separately from posts created by the network itself. Reach, persuasion and policy effects require different evidence, and a large content volume may still attract a small audience.
OpenAI explicitly characterized the disrupted Russian-origin network as having relatively limited reach. Reporting that boundary prevents a safety intervention from inadvertently amplifying the operation or exaggerating its effectiveness.
Publish with transparent attribution
State which facts come from the platform's report, which were independently confirmed and which remain allegations. Link the primary report, describe its incentives and avoid repeating inflammatory material beyond what readers need to understand the technique.
